About the Event

The first-ever Monsoon School on Inequality, organized by the Inequality Working Group of the Young Scholars Initiative in partnership with the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram, and Economiga, was an outstanding success. Held from July 20 to 22, 2024, this event brought together 40 selected young scholars from various parts of India, representing diverse social science backgrounds. With participants hailing from nearly 20 states across the country, the Monsoon School became a melting pot of ideas, perspectives, and rich discussions on economic inequality.

The event featured an impressive lineup of speakers, including prominent economists, policy experts, and scholars like Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Ashima Goyal, Pulapre Balakrishnan, and Rukmini S, among others. Their insightful presentations and engaging sessions delved deep into the multifaceted dimensions of inequality, exploring it through lenses of education, gender, caste, and policy changes. The carefully curated agenda included workshops on technical skills such as resume building and LaTeX, which were particularly well-received by the participants.

The participants actively engaged in the discussions, poster presentations, and workshops, making the event highly interactive and enriching. The diversity of participants and the quality of discourse were highly praised, with students expressing how the event significantly broadened their understanding of inequality in India.

The event concluded with a valedictory session that reflected on the key takeaways and the way forward in addressing inequality. The feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the networking opportunities and the depth of knowledge they gained. The Monsoon School on Inequality not only achieved its goal of fostering a deeper understanding of socio-economic disparities but also set a high standard for future events in this series.
